Why a Shearling Jacket Is the Warmest Coat You Can Buy (and How to Wear One)

Oct 27

Walk through any cold city in January and the warmest-looking people are usually wearing shearling. There is a reason the style keeps returning every winter: it works. This guide explains what shearling is, how it compares to other winter coats and how to wear a shearling jacket without looking like you borrowed it from a 1940s bomber crew, unless that is the plan.

What shearling actually is

Shearling is a sheepskin that has been tanned with the wool still attached. The leather side faces out and the wool faces in, so a shearling jacket is one piece of material doing two jobs: a windproof leather shell and a thick natural insulation layer. "Sherpa" and "faux shearling" describe synthetic fleece made to look like the real thing; it is lighter and cheaper but does not breathe or insulate the same way. On every Learto product page we state whether the lining is real shearling, faux shearling or faux fur, so you know what you are buying.

Why it is so warm

Wool fibres trap air in millions of tiny pockets, and trapped air is what keeps you warm. Unlike down, wool keeps insulating when it is damp, and unlike synthetic fleece, it pulls moisture away from the body so you do not get clammy indoors. The leather outer blocks wind completely, which is the part most knitwear and wool coats cannot do. The result is a jacket that is comfortable from freezing down to temperatures where most people reach for a technical parka.

Shearling versus other winter coats

  • Down puffer: lighter and more packable, but useless when wet and easily torn. Shearling is heavier but far more durable and looks better with age.
  • Wool overcoat: smarter for tailoring, but wind cuts straight through it. Shearling is windproof.
  • Leather jacket with fabric lining: good for autumn, not for deep winter. Shearling adds the insulation leather alone lacks.
  • Leather puffer: a middle ground. Our leather puffer jackets use synthetic fill under a leather shell for a lighter, sportier option.

The main shearling styles

Aviator and B3 bombers are the classic cut: wide wool collar, exposed wool at cuffs and hem, generous body. See our flight jacket guide for the history. Shearling biker jackets keep the asymmetric zip and lapels but line them with wool, which makes them the warmest option for riders. Shearling coats and trenches run longer and suit smarter outfits; browse long leather coats for knee-length options.

How to wear shearling: men

Shearling is bulky by nature, so keep everything else slim. Straight or tapered jeans, a fine-gauge knit or a plain tee and boots are all it needs. Brown and tan shearling pair best with navy, cream and denim; black shearling works with grey and black. Because the collar is the focal point, skip scarves unless it is bitterly cold and let the wool do the work. For most men, a true-to-size fit over a sweater is right; size up only if you want to layer a hoodie underneath.

How to wear shearling: women

An oversized shearling aviator over a fitted roll-neck and slim trousers is the easiest winter outfit there is. Belted shearling jackets and coats give a defined waist, which balances the volume of the collar, and cropped shearling bikers work well with high-waisted jeans or midi skirts. Explore women's leather jackets and coats for belted, cropped and long options.

Caring for shearling

Brush the wool gently after wear, spot clean with a damp cloth, let it air dry away from heat and store it in a breathable bag with a cedar block. Never machine wash it. Full instructions are in our leather and shearling care guide.

Is shearling worth the price?

A shearling jacket costs more than a fabric-lined leather jacket because the hide is thicker and the wool is part of the material rather than an added lining. In return you get a coat that handles the coldest months without layering and lasts for many winters. If you buy one winter coat, this is the one to buy.
